Computers

Have we reached the limit of computer power?

  • Currency: EUR

Moore’s Law stated for a good number of years that every 1 to 2 years the number of transistors that can fit on a given size computer chip will double. Thanks to Moore's law the chips have gotten smaller, faster, more efficient, and cheaper. But today, there are 4 key problems that trip up this trend, potentially ending Moore’s Law and fundamentally changing how computing progresses - there are some physical limits beyond we can't develop faster and smaller computers.

Who’s afraid of robots?

  • Currency: EUR

From computers to how we can make robots more human-like, from robots to who’s afraid of them... Probably for the next article I'll be calling Skynet for help but he is still busy with the war against humans in the terminator francize so he'll probably come back too late in case he is winning this time. Meantime Professor Victoria Baines, Gresham IT Livery Company Professor of Information Technology, returned for a lecture recorded on 7th January 2025.

How we can make robots more human-like

  • Currency: EUR

If you already found out if we have always had or not computers you may be interested how we can make robots more human-like. Digital computers or analog computers inside these robots, we don't know yet, but probably the analog computers will be more like us because we are analog chemical computers that evolved during many million of years and we continue evolving.

Have we always had computers?

  • Currency: EUR

Always, no. For a long time, yes. Not always we had domputers with silicon as part of their processors, not digital computers, but nevertheless we had computers for a long time. The Antikythera mechanism is an example pf ancient computer that were analog not digital. What links an ancient shipwreck to the textile mills of Northern England? Both contained forerunners of the computing we use today. Computer language and software also have a long history, featuring military research and the repurposing of early programs widely used in manufacturing.

Japan to build the world's most powerful supercomputer

  • Currency: EUR

This year, and that mean the year 2025 for the people still partying, Japan will start developing the world's first "zeta-class" supercomputer – a system 1.000 times more powerful than the fastest supercomputer today. But what are supercomputers and why do we even need them?

Thinkpads and MX Linux may be a good marriage even for the older machines, with or whitout Tim's holiday wine which helped in finalizing this video.

Could Artificial Intelligence build cities in space?

  • Currency: EUR

Theoretically yes, Artificial Intelligence will be able to build cities in space, but for the moment that's just a dream. A dream written about in some of my stories, but just a dream - the realitiy is far away from that. For the moment The Economist is taking the people watching the video fast forward into the future, when building in space is normal, from huge satellites and spacecraft in orbit, to entire cities on the Moon and Mars. Do you think could robots guided by Artificial Intelligence make it happen?

People say Google computer could solve a septillion-year task in minutes

  • Currency: EUR

It's hard to believe but it's not imposible, and people are speaking about Google unveiling a new chip which it claims takes five minutes to solve a problem that would currently take the world's fastest super computers ten septillion – or 10.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000 years – to complete. Google says its new quantum chip, dubbed "Willow", incorporates key "breakthroughs" and "paves the way to a useful, large-scale quantum computer", and Google’s next task: coming up with an actual use for all that theoretical power.

How soon will robots be able to behave like humans?

  • Currency: EUR

Making the physical part og the robots is not a new thing, the Terminator movies started 4 decades ago and the endoskeleton was developed in real life, bur making them move and behave better (human style) is much newer. Reinforcement learning - where the machines are taught to mimic humans - is how Artificial Intelligence is trained.

Why the first computers were made out of light bulbs

  • Currency: EUR

The processors we currently use in our computers, as PCs, laptops and smartphomes, are using one the best inventions from last century, the transistors, but they were not the first technology patents used for processing and that day computers. There were times when a simple computers with a processing power lesser than a smartphone were filling entire rooms and the transistors made them smaller and faster.

Can Artificial Intelligence-powered eye scans help identify diseases?

  • Currency: EUR

Retinal scans can already identify signs of conditions that can lead to blindness but now new research is investigating whether Artificial Intelligence can help us pick up other illnesses this way too.

London's Heathrow Airport trials Artificial Intelligence technology to enhance air traffic control operations

The Artificial Intelligence technology aims to improve efficiency and safety in managing the airport's high flight volume and its designed to work alongside human controllers, helping streamline decisions about aircraft movements on the ground and in the air.

How Artificial Intelligence is revolutionising science

  • Currency: EUR

Artificial Intelligence still has some problems but it's development and rise have accelerated in the last years, so the Artificial Intelligence is driving a transformation across all fields of science - from developing drugs for incurable diseases and improving the understanding of animal communication to self-driving labs. Could this prompt a new golden age of discovery?

Sir David Attenborough says Artificial Intelligence clone of his voice is 'disturbing'

  • Currency: EUR

Many people know and like or even love his voice but now we live in times when Artificial Intelligence can copy one human voice. Sir David Attenborough lived through many things during his lng life, he many not liked some of them and this one is definetly included: "I am profoundly disturbed to find these days my identity is being stolen by others and greatly object to them using is to say whatever they wish".

Apple Intelligence is for the Stupid Ones

  • Currency: EUR

Apple Intelligence commercials make it clear that Apple’s latest software is for idiots... and using some of the new tools feels pretty stupid, too. I kind of like the idea even if I don't own or use any Apple devices, and listening CNET’s Bridget Carey points out the problems with early Apple Intelligence features feels rather good.

Spending 24 hours in the woods with talking Artificial Intelligence chatbots

  • Currency: EUR

Meta Artificial Intelligence, Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot now have eerily human voices. and The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) Joanna Stern strapped some of the AI bots to a tripod and took them to a cabin in the woods to test their skills as helpers and as friends.

Disrupted: Artificial Intelligence robot wages war on weeds

  • Currency: EUR

Removing the bad chemicals from the food chain is essential for consumers' health and using Artificial Intelligence for that seems a good idea. Reuters is reporting that AIGEN hopes to achieve that with their Artificial Intelligence robot, which aims to eradicate weeds from USA farms without the use of herbicides.

Rise of Artificial Intelligence influencers raising ethical concerns

  • Currency: EUR

BBC is saying that there are growing concerns over the number of Artificial Intelligence influencers gaining traction on social media. People behind the Artificial Intelligence models, such as Aitana (and it's the first time I am hearing about it), say they are making thousands of British pounds a month from product endorsements - but others have questioned the ethics behind the posts.

Artificial Intelligence generated child sexual abuse images are spreading

Law enforcement across the USA are cracking down on a troubling spread of child sexual abuse imagery created through Artificial Intelligence technology. The United States are racing to ensure those generating obscene imagery of kids can be prosecuted under their laws.

Scientists discuss the science of perception & Artificial Intelligence

  • Currency: EUR

We all living in a simulation inside our brains because the brain can't feel directly the world being inside a bone we call skull, it depends on what the senses are providing and the nerve are transmiting and it needs to create something simulated as a mirror to the world. That mirror can be good or bad, and as long the mirror is in one peace and not broken you may be OK as a person. Meantime Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly learn about the root of perception, if Artificial Intelligence really is intelligent, and The Free Energy Principle with theoretical neuroscientist Karl Friston.

So you should discover the Free Energy Principle as a framework for understanding how the brain self-organizes and minimizes uncertainty about the world. The discussion chapters are:

  • 00:00 - Introduction: Karl Friston
  • 03:32 - What is The Free Energy Principle?
  • 11:10 - Breaking down active inference & perception
  • 16:04 - Perception versus imagination
  • 19:15 - What it means to predict
  • 21:27 - Albert Einstein’s brain, embodiment, & large language models
  • 25:48 - The matrix, deja vu & missing reality
  • 32:28 - The intelligence in large language models

Websites are considered visual brands for any person, entity, product or service. They are a way to show to the entire world (or, at least, to the targeted niche) what someone is doing during this period, what you sell or what you offer now. The first step is establishing the strategy for the following months or years - that's as important as the design and site itself.
