History is learning us that some of the atrocities of the age of Europe’s religious wars immediately became notorious and the next one also may become notorius in the same way. The execution of tens of thousands of women and men for witchcraft, by contrast, passed largely unremarked – until modern times, when this history was revived, rewritten and wildly exaggerated.
