The responsive web design is done when the website is detecting and adapting to the visitors screens.

It is important to show the information in a specific format on laptops and desktops and the same informations shown adapted or using a different format to smaller screens of the smartphones and tables. The website may get visitors from all places having all type of devices and we are living  into a world where many or most visitors are using smartphone. I've seen 2 different ways to do that. First way is to build a website that is detecting the screen size and it's changing what the w visitor sees via php, javascript or css. The second way it's showing the smartphone design on a different subdomain.
