For many million of years the mammals live in the shadows of the dinosaurs (in actually shadows because the non-avian dinosaurs were pretty big while our ancestor mammals were pretty small those times - about the size of a mouse). That size allowed them to survive the asteroid impact that killed most of the dinosaurs 65-66 million years ago, and now the size changed. The surviving dinosaurs, the birds, are living (many of them, the chickens and the pets) are living in our shadows unless they are flying away. This is how evolution works, the species are adapting to their environment, and many times they are completely different in size, look and even behavior after a few million years.
