He finds a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, and the, later, the hero hurries into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling - where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. He is aided by Nina (Rene Russo), a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news. The interesting things is when Lou Bloom blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.
Gaunt and hollow-eyed, Jake Gyllenhaal lost about 10 kilograms for the role and effuses a crisp, confident appearance reminiscent of a young Christian Bale in American Psycho.
