The movie is based on the 2006 French film Mon frère se marie and it follows the long divorced couple Don and Ellie Griffin (De Niro and Keaton) who fakes being married as their family unites for their adopted son Alejandro's wedding. The matters are complicated by the unexpected attendance of his biological mother - a devout Catholic who is unaware her son's foster parents are no longer together. So the family decide to pretend the bickering pair are still married for the duration of the wedding, a move that forces them to confront their past, present and future - much to the disdain of Don's current partner Bebe (Sarandon), who also happens to be Ellie's former best friend.
