I don't want to comment about the tendencies inside the Catolic Church, I am outside of it as much as it is possible (I am an Atheist). But there are a lot of people studying the subject (more or less objective), they have spoken and they have written (more or less covering the subject) and they offered a few list of possible futures popes. There are enough candidates, but only one will succed... just about lift as it is at the basis: even the race is a team effort, only one spermatozoon fecundates the egg.
So, osv.com says that the most likely candidates are the Cardinal Angelo Scola (71 years old), the Cardinal Marc Ouellet (68 years old) and the Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco (70 years old). Heavy.com makes a list with top ten candidates:
- Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana (a black guy, the first Ghanaian cardinal, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace)
- Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Canada (the prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America)
- Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria (another black fellow, the Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and Cardinal Bishop of Velletri-Segni)
- Cardinal Leonardo Sandri of Argentina (the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches)
- Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras (the Archbishop of Tegucigalpa and President of Caritas Internationalis)
- Archbishop Angelo Scola of Italy (Archbishop of Milan, a scholar on Islam and Catholic-Muslim dialogue).
- Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi of Italy (he serves in the Roman Curia as President of the Pontifical Council for Culture)
- Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco of Italy (the Archbishop of Genoa and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference)
- Cardinal Christoph Schonborn of Austria (the Archbishop of Vienna and President of the Austrian Bishops Conference)
- Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone of Italy (he serves as Cardinal Secretary of State and Camerlengo and was previously the Archbishop of Vercelli)
Some other lists, with about the same names and in different order, plus some reason why each of them should become Pope can be found on nj.com and ncronline.com.
