Inside one of the world’s fastest supercomputers, May 2025

The Swiss city of Lugano is home to one of the world’s most advanced supercomputers and BBC Tech Now reporters went to visit a centre with the latest generation of high-performance computing to see how the technology works. Two of the computer problems are electricity requirements and the heat people get using them, and this supercomputer has more requirements that usual computer and the Swiss need to cool it with what they have available a lot - cold water.

Make it smaller, portable like a laptop, and I'll get at least now. Cooling it will be probably harder because of climate change and the world becoming heater and heater, but I'll manage. I will probably connect it at the grid but I already have a better idea for its electricity demands, so that won't be a problem. Only catching a cold can become a problem, but that can be easily solved.

I have only one condiiton: the supercomputer must run Linux because of better performance than Windows and macOS. Linux being free is a plus.
