For centuries the human scientists have tried to identify what is special about the human brain. Do you want to find out how do they approach this problem from a mathematical standpoint? Their first hypothesis is that bigger is better, in some sense, but this is not always true.
In this Gresham introductory lecture, Alain Goriely talked with his followers scaling laws and simple ideas from statistics will be used to study this problem, both in humans and animals, as well as uncover some basic principles that govern brain size and test hypotheses connecting intelligence to size in humans and animals..
This lecture was recorded a few days ago, on 17th September 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London, and probably the situation has not changed yer - it's probably not going to change in the next century.
